Western Digital has its first Solid State Drives (SSD presented), aimed specifically at consumers. The models of the SiliconEdge-Blue series are available with capacities up to 256 GByte. They are based on multi-level memory cell (MLC) and have an error correction code (ECC).

The 2.5-inch drives use a SATA-2 interface. The reading speed is to Western Digital with up to 250 MByte / s, the write speed of up to 170 MByte / s. The mean time between failures (Mean Time Between Failures, MTBF) is 1.4 million hours.

For read operations, the energy of the solid state drives is 2 watts, on writes it rises to 3.5 watts. At idle, the consumption drops to 0.6 watts. The models in the range SiliconEdge Blue according to the company are very robust and have a high tolerance to vibrations and falls. According to the manufacturer, they keep surges of up to 1000G.

SiliconEdge Blue SSDs dominate the Windows 7 supported TRIM command, which creates a continuous high performance of solid state drives. They are loud Western Digital now available in the U.S.. The 64-gigabyte model costs $ 279, the variants with 128 GB and 256 GB are at $ 529 or $ 999.
